Railways around Manchester
Compiled by John Glover HERE is an excellent publication that concentrates on the hugely varied and complex rail system that was once centred on Manchester. These high-quality monochrome images portray the railway system as it operated before the extensive post-Beeching rationalisation and modernisation of railway operations, infrastructure, and the network as a whole.
The book includes extensive 1960s coverage of the Greater Manchester area during the transition period from steam to modern traction – and the book as a whole concentrates on the 40-year period following Nationalisation in 1948.
A huge variety of motive power is featured from pre-Grouping steam right through to blue electrics. Mainline, suburban, freight, goods and shunting operations are included – as are numerous stations and older infrastructure – much of which has now vanished.
This valuable publication allows ‘time travel’ for the reader whilst savouring the wealth of detail in the images. Strongly Recommended. RSS
