Contract awarded to construct new Cambridge South railway station
A CONTRACT to build the new £93.4 million station at Cambridge South has been awarded to J Murphy and Sons Ltd by Network Rail.
The new station will be situated next to the city’s biomedical campus and forms part of the proposed East-West Rail route, which aims to unlock £103 billion of economic growth.
The station will have four platforms and the actual building will be a two-storey design, and its facilities will include lifts providing stepfree access to all platforms, accessible toilets, baby change facilities, waiting area and space for retail/catering and ticket vending machines.
There will be access for pedestrians and cyclists from both sides of the railway, with capacity for 1000 cycle parking spaces. There will be some modification to local roads and crossings to cater for the new station.
Changes are also needed to the rail infrastructure which will be remodelled to accommodate two new loops for the four platforms, signalling modifications, a new substation, modification to the railway on the southern approach to Cambridge station, enhancements to Shepreth branch junction and the closure of two private footpaths and the provision of alternative access.
Enabling works are underway. A worksite compound has been established, new overhead line masts have been installed and the front walls of the platforms constructed. Work will now continue to deliver the station through to completion, currently planned for 2025.
When open, the station will provide services for stations towards London, Ely, Birmingham and Stansted Airport.
