‘Toomua yellow gave us energy’

-

GLASGOW director of rugby Gregor Townsend took the blame for his side’s failure to finish off more attacks in this rout over Leicester and vowed to improve for next week.

And after a patchy opening, he said a yellow card to Matt Toomua changed the game.

“Parts of the performance were outstanding and it was great to see the players play well – but there’s work to do,” he said.” It’s mainly my coaching, because there were a few attack plays that didn’t work well.

“The Toomua yellow card got us energised. The first 15 minutes had seen a lot of mistakes but after that incident we responded well.

“It’s been a tough week but now we can watch Munster play Racing and have three days of coaching before we go again. We’ll need it.

“It was a brilliant night for our wingers and for Zander Fagerson to do well against two very good loosehead props.”

Leicester counterpart Richard Cockerill said: “The first 15 minutes were all right and then we went downhill rapidly.

“Then we made silly errors and invited Glasgow into the game, they are very good on the front foot and punished us. We couldn’t cope when they had quick ball and quick recycle.”

Cockerill, not a fan of 4G pitches, refused to blame the Scotstoun surface for his side’s failings. “That’s got nothing to do with what happened. Purely to do with us.”
