Tonbridge reach last eight with Millfield revenge

- By NICK VERDIER

TONBRIDGE reached the Champions Trophy quarter-finals as they recorded a 26-7 win over Millfield on Wednesday.

The Kent school, who were kicked out of the competition two years ago by the famous Somerset powerhouse, made amends scoring four tries to one.

Tries from Adam Petry and Suanu SaroWiwa handed the hosts a 12-0 lead at the break and they were followed by Ollie Wildblood and Charlie Spawforth in the second half to seal the win despite Sonny Bryant-Winning going over for Millfield.

They will now travel to Eaton who thumped Grammar School at Leeds 55-12 while Oakham will take on Monmouth after their 15-3 success over Clifton.

A try from No.8 Ryan Hussey made sure Champions Bedford beat St Paul’s 16-13 which set up a quarterfinal clash against Catford who overcame Kingswood 48-20.

The last fixture will see a remake of last year’s semi-final between Epsom and Blunbell’s after they claimed victories over St John’s Leatherhead (29-12) and Bristol Grammar (44-19) on Tuesday.

This week also saw plenty of NatWest Cup action with John Fisher edging Trinity 8-6 in the Croydon derby while Champions Bromsgrove came through a tight encounter with a Bloxham side to win 34-26.

In the last round of the AASE League, Beechen Cliff beat St Paul’s 41-5 to secure their place in the playoffs.

Coach Sean Turner said: “Leaving it to the last game put it on a bit of a knife-edge for us, so we had to show that resilience.

“There was pressure on that game, we knew how we wanted to play the game and that’s shown and come through, so a lot of credit to the boys.”
