Flying pair too hot for Wasps to handle

- By RACHEL PARRY

SARACENS returned to winning ways yesterday in style with both Garnet MacKinder and Seraphine Okemba scoring a hat-trick in their thumping of Wasps.

Following a narrow defeat to Richmond last weekend, Wasps were keen to make amends at home and get that elusive first win of the season.

But, led by the flying duo of MacKinder and Okemba, it was Sarries who made up for their home defeat to Worcester at Allianz Park last time out.

“It's always a physical game against Wasps and they made us work for every point,” said captain Sonia Green. “But I'm really proud of the way the girls bounced back from the loss last weekend.”

Wasps came firing out of the blocks with Rebecca Rowe scoring within a minute but Sarries quickly went in front when Zoe Harrison touched down under the posts from a dominant scrum.

But Wasps looked unphased and slick hands from Ashley Perry sent Liz Crake over the line taking the score to 10-7 in favour of the hosts.

MacKinder and Okemba then came to the fore and with two tries each, it was Saracens who went into the break with a handy 31-10 lead.

Okemba completed her hat-trick soon after the restart while Harrison’s second definitely put the game to bed.

It was then MacKinder’s turn to go over for her third of the game and she turned provider on the last one sending Kat Evans over.

Wasps had the last word with Jay Sime grabbing a late consolation try but captain Sarah Mitchelson was left disappointed by her side’s defence.

She said: “Today was a disappointing step backwards in defence. But we know what we need to do. We just need to put it together for 80 minutes.”
