Macc left feeling Blue as Williams nicks it

- ■ By SAM BEECH

JAMES Williams’ lastsecond conversion of a penalty try gave Birmingham Moseley the narrowest of victories at Macclesfield.

The game started off as a scrappy affair. The opening stanza consisted of scrums and lineouts, meaning that neither side was able to carve out a foothold to play attacking rugby.

The deadlock was finally broken on the quarter hour as Williams slotted a penalty from inside the 22. Macc responded two minutes later, Elliot Brierley crossing over in the corner after some slick hands, especially from Tom Mantell.

As the half went on Macc started to see more of the ball, this was rewarded when Myles Hall crossed after hitting a great line with ten to go in the half and they led 12-3 at the break.

Macc started the brighter of the two teams in the second period, again frustrating Birmingham at every turn. The kicking game from Macc key in pinning back and holding Moseley in front of a hostile crowd at Priory Park.

With Macclesfield down a man after Josh Redfern’s sin-binning, the visitors capitalised, Tom Wilson scoring under the posts with ten to go.

Macc were awarded a penalty which Morton dispatched to widen the margin back to five points.

But with one minute left Redfern got a second yellow card for dissent and Birmingham elected to scrum. From there they got the penalty try and Williams sealed the win.
