Versatile Ospreys looking good for the double
I PLAYED in some great teams at the Ospreys, but I think the current side could go on and achieve something we never managed when I was at the Liberty Stadium.
We suffered some tough defeats in the latter stages of Europe, but I think if Steve Tandy’s men can get a home quarter-final in this season’s Challenge Cup then they can go on and win the competition.
I know it’s not the Champions Cup, but to win silverware in Europe would be an impressive achievement. There’s the PRO12, too, with the Ospreys now top of the pile and I’m sure they’ll be targeting both competitions.
In the Challenge Cup, their results have shown they’re taking it very seriously and to score the number of tries they have has been hugely impressive.
I really think they are capable of going all the way. If they get a win over Lyon they’re likely to be at home in the last eight which is a massive advantage.
It’s important not to get too carried away, but I think the Ospreys have the ability to play a number of different ways. That’s hugely exciting.
In guys like Alun-Wyn Jones, Dan Baker and Scott Baldwin they have the power to deal with a forward-dominated battle. Then there’s the creativity of Justin Tipuric in the back row and dangerous backs such as Keelan Giles, Sam Davies and Dan Evans who can cut a team to bits when given the chance to run. Dan Biggar isn’t a bad option at fly-half, either.
It’s a hugely exciting time to be a supporter of the region and the aim now must be to keep their run of form going. And if they end up with a PRO12 and Challenge Cup double at the end of the season, I think you’d have to say they’re up with the best sides we’ve seen in Ospreys’ history.
