Fabulous Jack has field day to down Hinckley

- ■ By JOHN LYON

SEVENTEEN points for Jack Lavin proved the difference for Caldy as they ground down Hinckley in a back-and-forth first-half battle to stay ten points clear at the league summit.

Caldy dominated in the scrums and scored twice from shunting the Hinckley eight backwards, with No.8 JJ Dickinson finishing off the two first-half scores.

Hinckley picked up a couple of scores by capitalising on Caldy mistakes, flanker George Cox going over after 14 minutes and winger Mitchell Lamb with nearly half an hour gone, with full-back Conor Bullivant converting the first.

With two minutes left before half-time, the game was in the balance at 14-12 until Caldy’s Rhys Hayes lit up the match with a magnificent solo try.

Attacking the line at pace the No.10 stepped through numerous tackles and scorched over to give Caldy a handy 21-12 halftime lead. After the break a tremendous midfield burst by Caldy hooker Ted Stagg put in winger Nick Royle for a score to break the visitors’ resistance.

Winger Tommy Banks crossed for his first score before Hinckley’s Ewan Bartlett drove over to give the visitors some hope.

However, after Lavin picked up an interception try and Banks scored his second, Hinckley had to settle for their try bonus point courtesy of Callum Rowe with the last play of an open and entertaining game.
