Redruth dominant as Barnes ducked at Elms

- ■ By WARREN MUGGLETON

ALEX DUCKER’S brace sealed victory for Redruth in a dominant performance against Barnes at Barn Elms.

Ducker scored his 23rd and 24th tries of the season, remaining the league’s top-scorer, as the home side lived up to the star man’s name and failed to register a point on the board.

Barnes started competitively, coming into this match off a run of two wins in three matches.

Redruth almost went ahead though when they were awarded a penalty on 14 minutes, only for fullback Brett Rule to kick short.

But the visitors did break through on 23 minutes when they were awarded a penalty try, which sent Barnes’ Matt Chambers to the sin-bin.

No.8 Kyle Marriott capitalised on a loose ball to score Redruth’s second try on the half-hour, and the visitors confirmed their first-half dominance when Lewis Vinnicombe finished off a sweeping team try on 34 minutes.

The second half did not start as well for Redruth as centre Joel Matavesi was sin-binned for a trip on 46 minutes.

But Barnes were unable to maximise their one-man advantage as Ducker then scored on the hour.

And he scored his second on 70 minutes, finishing off a swift team move, converted by fly-half Angus Taylor.

Barnes applied pressure late on, but it was too little too late.
