Lopez relishing his chance on the big European stage

- ■ By NICK VERDIER

CLERMONT have not been at their best in recent weeks but fly-half Camille Lopez reckons only one game matters in April – today’s semi-final against Leinster in Lyon.

The French giants lost at home to local rivals Brive 26-21 a fortnight ago before condemning Grenoble to relegation last week with a 59-18 win to build the confidence.

Today in Lyon, they will try to reach their third European Cup final in five years and Lopez said: “We haven’t been very consistent recently but there’s only one important game in April.

“There is a lot of excitement within the squad but we’ve tried to keep it as normal as we could in training to make sure we’re firing on all cylinders come the kick-off.

“We had a good European campaign so far with some good results in the pool ensuring we played our quarter-final against Toulon at home and now have the chance to take on Leinster in Lyon.

“There’s nothing to wonder about. If we want go all the way, it’s simple, we have to go full steam and beat everyone in our way.”

Such occasions are exactly why Lopez left Castres and moved to Clermont two seasons ago.

He added: “I signed here hoping I’d experience games like this one. The pressure is on but it’s only positive pressure and I’m enjoying it.

“We can’t stress about anything. We have to fall back on what we know we do well and the belief we have built up since the start of this Champions Cup.”
