Blaydon stay alive thanks to big win over Park

- ■ By JOHN BRENNAN

BLAYDON ensured their bid for survival will go down to the final day after they cruised to a bonuspoint win over Rosslyn Park.

Three converted tries in the first half gave them a stranglehold on the game, and they clinched the important bonus point just one minute into the second period, only taking their foot off the throttle late on before next week’s crucial game.

As a result they head into their final fixture with Old Albanian two points behind Hull Ionians with one of the two set to join Macclesfield in National Two next season.

Flanker Jack Davidson found a convenient gap in the fifth minute to get the score moving and he was followed by hooker Matt Thompson from a penalty to the corner.

A similar move saw Davidson in again to make it 21-0 at the break and then number four followed from Frazer Wilson, a fine solo effort down the left.

Thompson then grabbed a second before Blaydon got a sixth through Andrew Archibald.

Leading 40-0 the job was done with 20 minutes remaining, and Blaydon, with one eye on next week’s vital last game, made some substitutions, and visibly relaxed to let in Park for four tries of their own.

Winger David Vincent was involved in most of it, scoring twice himself with full-back Henry Robinson and flanker Josh Ovens grabbing the other two for the visitors for a bonus point of their own.
