Zinzan watches Redruth hang on for win
TWO first-half tries were enough for Redruth to edge a narrow win against a worthy Bury St. Edmunds side, who will feel they could have got more than just a losing bonus point.
Conditions were horrible throughout, with the driving rain contributing to an error-strewn game. Former All Black Zinzan Brooke was an interested spectator at the match.
Despite playing down the slope, Redruth took time to settle and went behind to a penalty from Bury’s Liam McBride.
The Reds replied soon after when Loma Kivalu was driven over from a catch and drive for an unconverted try.
Redruth’s back row began to take a hold of the game, with Sam Matavesi, Kyle Marriott and Chris Fuca all making big drives.
Good play before the half-hour mark enabled
Marriott and centre Connor Gilbert to make good ground before Nielson Webber slipped the ball for Fuca to power over. Webber kicked a good conversion in the conditions.
Bury went close before half-time with Dwayne Corcoran almost barging over. They earned a penalty kicked by McBride to make it a six-point game.
Bury started the second half with purpose and when replacement Fraser Honey kicked a penalty they sensed something special. Honey had another chance from long-range but his effort fell well short and Redruth held on.
