Maiden Fowden score just enough

- ■ By ALLAN FOSTER

REPLACEMENT Luke Fowden scored his first try for Fylde in the final minute of the game to help his side see off Bishop’s Stortford.

The home side had led 19-3 after first-half tries from Thomas Grimes, Oliver Parkinson and Thomas Carleton but a penalty try for Stortford reduced the deficit just before the break.

Chris Smith and replacement Stephen Ball then levelled the game for the visitors, before Fowden was fed by Carleton to secure the win.

Grimes continued to prove himself as one of Fylde’s best summer signings with an eighth-minute try.

With Stortford’s William Roberts in the sin bin, Parkinson extended the lead and just ten minutes later that the visitors were down to 14 again when No.8 Daniel Leo was shown a yellow.

Carleton took full advantage to get Fylde’s third try with a superb solo effort in the corner.

A penalty try, after Will Hopwood was sent to the bin, gave Stortford hope at the break.

And the visitors utilised it as Smith raced down the left to reduce the deficit before Ball touched down from a driving maul to level the scores at 22 apiece.

It was left for Fowden to find a final bit of magic with replacement Alex Dolly converting.
