Club grind their way to victory
A DETERMINED defensive display from Blackheath saw them come away from Volac Park with the victory over Cambridge.
The first half was a tight and tense affair, as both sides exchanged periods of territory and possession. A penalty from Blackheath fly-half Joseph Tarrant was returned minutes later by opposite number Jack Green.
The two sides then shared a try apiece as Jake McCloud and Hugh McCormick-Houston each crossed to leave the score at 10-8.
But the visitors would’ve been the happier side going into the dressing room at half time as a missed tackle allowed Tom Baldwin space to score and make it 17-8 at the break.
Cambridge then enjoyed 20 minutes of domination deep in Blackheath’s territory but couldn’t break down a resolute and blitzing defensive line, and three points for a successful penalty was all they managed to earn for their efforts.
From the restart, Blackheath earned themselves a penalty, which Tarrant kicked before Joshua Davies broke through the Cambridge line, and spirit, to score.
Cambridge did grab a consolation through Rob Conquest in the final seconds of the contest.
