Flawless Fielding scoffs at blustery weather

Blackheath .... 20 Birmingham .... 12

- ■ By GRAHAM COX

A TRY double, a long-range penalty and a fine kick to touch, all from Leo Fielding, set up victory for Blackheath in conditions that played havoc at times with attempts at kicking.

Not so for the Blackheath wing, however, who drilled a 45-metre penalty in the fourth minute to open the scoring.

He followed it up soon after with the kick to touch that saw the Club pack gather to drive Harry Bate across for the first try.

More than once, Moseley came up against tackling fierce enough to dislodge possession, but their setpiece gave them a platform.

Their best moment of the opening half came when a grubber kick forced a close-range line-out.

However, Blackheath resisted the drive before turning over to ensure their 8-0 advantage.

CJ Osazuwa took clean line-out ball for Blackheath on 46 minutes and, as the pack again drove forward, the ball found Fielding, who had enough space to walk across the goal-line for the first of his tries.

Moseley to wait until the hour and a mistake from Blackheath at the line-out, for their first try, which came as the ball was moved wide to Mark Harrison, who squeezed over.

However, a chip over the defensive line forced the Midlanders to concede a five-metre scrum, from which Fielding to slid over, Joe Tarrant this time converting. Though Ciaran Moore crossed for Moseley, it was not significant.
