If the scrums are competitive you will see a great game predicts Gatland

-

AS you would expect, Wales coach Warren Gatland is among those who have clocked that Wales enjoy the same sequence of fixtures this year as when they won Grand Slams in 2008 and 2012.

“People are saying it is the hardest draw with England and Ireland away. I think it is the easiest. I like having the three blue teams at home and just the two away,” insists Gatland. “They are tough, but they are games you feel you have a chance on your day of doing well against teams we have had success against in the past.

“Our Six Nations record since I have been involved is nearly 75 per cent. We have had a lot of success away from home.”

Gatland is also mindful of the unpredictable nature of the tournament with, historically, no side ever dominating for a significant period.

England would become the first side in Championship history, dating back to 1883, to win the tournament outright three years in succession if they triumphed this year. There have only ever been five back-to-back Grand Slams.

Gatland adds: “Last year was the first in my experience that a team that went into the Six Nations as favourites won it, England. Previously, the predicted team did not win it. This competition will be one of the closest we have ever had. It is great to see the resurgence of Scotland and the threat they pose.

“Scotland first up at home focuses the mind, particularly for the

players who were involved last year, our first loss to Scotland in about ten years. Everyone talks about the game being won up front and we well aware of their prop injuries. You have to be smart: if there is a vulnerability you have to exploit it. We will be looking to do that but when someone steps in because of an injury you tend to work a bit harder in that area because you know the opposition might target you. If Scotland’s scrum is competitive, you will see a great game of rugby because both teams are positive.”
