No joy for Dons on their travels to Kent

- ■ By JOSHUA JOHNSON

CANTERBURY secured their 11th win of the season with a hard-fought victory against Wimbledon.

In a low-quality affair, the hosts just about did enough to get over the line – with Wimbledon only able to muster some points deep in the second half.

It was a disappointing result for the visitors, who had beaten Bury St Edmunds last week but continue to struggle on the road.

Things did not start well this week, with Canterbury scoring within six minutes of the kick-off.

The forwards provided quick ball with some good work at the breakdown and flanker Jake Rigby capitalised on some space to dive across the line for the opening try.

Oliver Best missed the conversion and Wimbledon attacked with gusto but they lacked the quality to seriously hurt Canterbury’s backline.

A second home try seemed inevitable before the break and it came when some good handling in the centres created space out wide and electric winger Harry Sayers pounced for the score.

The second half was a turgid affair with the conditions affecting both teams.

But Wimbledon slowly re-established themselves and set the home nerves jangling when they forced a penalty try two minutes from the death.

However, any hope was quickly snuffed out when scrum-half Daniel Smart darted over for a late home score.
