FLY-HALF Matthew Lewis steered Bargoed into the last eight of the WRU National Cup with a comfortable win over plucky Rhydyfelin.

The impressive Lewis scored one of his team’s six tries and added the conversions to five of them for a personal tally of 15 points.

Other tries came from centre Lewis Bowden, flanker Jonathan Armitage, other centre Darren Humphries, replacement back Jordan Howells and wing Duane Dyer.

The tie had originally been scheduled to take place at Bargoed Park but was switched to the 3G pitch at Ystrad Mynach due to the heavy rain.

The Village put up a good fight in the opening exchanges to restrict their opponents to just a 7-0 interval lead, as Bargoed eventually gained a good foothold deep in their opponents’ territory and the powerful Bowden broke through a number of weak tackles to crash over for a 25th-minute try converted by Lewis. Bargoed should have increased their lead in first-half injury time.

A sharp burst out of defence by wing Ashley Norton supported by fullback Julian Mogg created the opportunity for a strong second phase attack but the cover defence scrambled the ball to safety.

Despite the visitors’ fight, the wheels came off for them when they allowed Armitage to snap up his try from a charged down kick two minutes after the restart.

Then they were reduced to 13 men for a short time in the third quarter when wing Jordan Rees and prop Kelvin Williams were shown yellow cards.

Bargoed cut loose with some smart attack to seal a thoroughly comprehensive win. Star man Matthew Lewis - Bargoed
