Judo horror injury will force Sam to quit at 26

- ■ By NEIL FISSLER

SAM JONES is set to hang up his boots after failing to recover from an horrendous injury he suffered on England duty.

The Wasps flanker shattered a leg and ankle during a judo drill in the build up to the 2016 Autumn International campaign when he was tipped to make his debut.

He was grappling with Saracens lock Maro Itoje when he was injured and it is understood he has been advised to call it a day.

The 26-year-old who rose through the Wasps ranks was expected to be out of action for only five months but the injury turned out to be much worse than first thought.

Jones was given the news when he visited a specialist last week.

A Wasps spokesman last night refused to comment when we contacted them to verify the story.

WALLABY Karmichael Hunt is looking for a move to Europe later this year despite penning a contract extension with the ARU only last November.

Hunt, 30, who can play centre, wing and full-back is one of the few men to have played Super Rugby, NRL and AFL.

He is currenlty facing a charge of cocaine possession in Australia and

Blindside understands that the ARU will release him from the final year of his contract which is due to run out at the end of the 2019.

Hunt, who was born in Auckland, spent a year playing in France for Biarritz in 2009 after leaving the Brisbane Broncos and is keen to return to Europe.

He could interest Worcester Warriors and Sale Sharks who are both looking to fill back three positions next season.

The most likely move for Hunt, however, is a return to France where he has been attracting a lot of interest since coming onto the market.

Hunt enjoyed his best season ever with Queensland Reds in last season’s Super Rugby which helped to earn him the extension to his deal with the ARU.

Bordeaux and Toulouse are both interested in giving him a second crack at the Top 14 and are preparing contract offers.
