Woods has win formula again to halt Commandos

- ■ By JAY BAYFORD

EBBW Vale produced a professional performance to beat Pontypridd at Eugene Cross Park and hand Greg Woods his first win as head coach.

Woods masterminded a victory over Ponty in the WRU National Cup in his final game in charge of Cross Keys.

And he got the better of the Valley Commandos once again here.

Fly-half Dorian Jones kicked the Steelmen ahead, but a superb passing move enabled Ponty to hit back with a try from Chris Dicomidis.

He had also gone over in Pontypridd’s 45-12 victory over the Steelmen in November.

However, Jones struck two more penalties to push Ebbw into a four-point lead.

Ebbw Vale went down to 14 men when scrum-half Dai Jones was sent to the sin-bin.

Rob Sevenoaks also saw yellow just as Jones returned to the field.

But, despite their numerical disadvantage, they managed to keep Ponty at bay. And an early yellow card for Ponty’s Corey Domachowski swung the advantage in the hosts’ favour.

Ebbw took full advantage with centre James Lewis going over to pull Ebbw clear.

Dorian Jones added the extras to all but seal the result but there was still enough time for him to land his fourth penalty of the evening.

It condemned Ponty to their first defeat in six league games. Star man Dorian Jones – Ebbw Vale
