Thorley’s looking to keep on improving

- TOM BRADSHAW

GLOUCESTER flyer Ollie Thorley may well be in the try-scoring groove, but the winger says he needs to sharpen up his dancing feet if he is to maintain his impressive momentum so far this season.

Thorley, 21, awaiting assessment of an injury sustained against Leicester yesterday, is the club’s top try-scorer with 10. And after signing a contract extension with the Cherry and Whites last month, he is quick to point out the areas he needs to improve.

“Off-loading is one of the big areas for me, and another is to keep improving my footwork,” said the former Cheltenham College pupil. “It’s about making sure I’m adaptable as possible, regardless of who we are playing.”

Club legend James Simpson-Daniel says Thorley’s assured performances have got Gloucester out of a sticky situation after Jonny May quit for Leicester.

“It’s an area where Gloucester are less strong,” said Simpson-Daniel. “It’s an understatement to say that when Jonny decided to leave it wasn’t ideal timing.

“Gloucester were left behind in strength and depth in that position but Ollie’s attitude is very good, he is fast and strong.”

Simpson-Daniel believes head coach Johan Ackermann is proving a great additon, adding: “Johan’s spot on. He’s focusing on building a bigger, nastier pack and he is using youngsters like Jake Polledri and keeping them in the team to reward them for their good performances.”
