Meredith try keeps Lucs’ hopes burning

- By GEOFF VICKRESS

LUCTONIANS kept alive their fight to avoid relegation by earning a tight victory over a Macclesfield side that had dominated the early stages.

Lucs rarely touched the ball in the opening encounters and Macc deservedly opened the scoring after 24 minutes when James Hampson was fortunate to see his own pass rebounded off a Lucs player back into his own hands and he raced clear to score.

Luc’s ground their way back into the match and were twice unlucky not to level the scores, but they dropped passes with the touchline at their mercy.

However, following handbags in the dying moments of the first half, the referee reversed a penalty for Macc and Sam Boxhall stepped up to give the home side three points.

The home side stepped up their game and when

they were awarded penalties against an increasingly undisciplined Macc side, they took the kicks to goal and Boxhall added two attempts to give the home side a deserved lead.

However, the dangerous Lewis Barker gave the away side the lead against the run of play when he scored following good work by Hall. Barker converted his own try to give the Blues the lead 12-9.

Luc’s were not to be denied and Boxhall’s penalty with 10 minutes to go gave them hope before Frank Kelly putting Charlie Meredith away to give the home side victory.
