Webber strikes late as Ponty come from behind

Aberavon ........ 15 Pontypridd .... 19

- By HOWARD EVANS

A TRY by Pontypridd wing Alex Webber four minutes from time ensured his side a victory in a good match with little between the two teams.

Aberavon looked to have won it with an amazing solo effort from their exciting wing Jay Baker eight minutes earlier that had put them in front for the first and only time.

It was a fast-flowing match largely dominated by a strong wind that saw Ponty lead 12-0 early on and then having to recover from a 15-12 deficit.

With referee Ian Davies letting the game run well, it was Ponty who grabbed an early lead through a try by their powerful centre Gary Williams and that lead increased when young fly-half Jordan Rees sent Webber in for his first try, converted by Rees.

Aberavon skipper James Garland pulled back a penalty before the interval and then the Wizards stormed to the attack with Baker head and shoulders over every other player.

Replacement Jacob Flynn fed the powerful centre Rheon James who burst over for Garland to convert and then Baker suddenly broke from halfway and left all the defenders way behind.

But, Pontypridd were never going to lie down and with the experienced Ceri Sweeney on for Rees, they surged back downfield for Webber to go over as he was tackled.

It took a touch-judge to decide that it was grounded fairly and Sweeney converted.
