Timoney’s double gets Ulster into Cup

- By DECLAN ROONEY

ULSTER secured their spot in next season’s Champions Cup as Nick Timoney’s double clinched a crucial bonuspoint win against Glasgow at Kingspan Stadium.

The vital fourth try didn’t arrive until the 83rd minute, but Timoney barged over in the corner to give Ulster the points.

They also remain in the hunt for a PRO14 quarter-final spot, but need Edinburgh to slip up next weekend, while Ulster need a bonus point win at Thomond Park.

“It is massive for us. We knew we had to get maximum points here today and we managed to do it with the very last play,” said Ulster coach Dwayne Peel.

“There was lots of turnovers and lots of errors today but both sides wanted to put the ball through the hands.”

Callum Gibbins scored twice for Glasgow Warriors but they fell away after his second arrived early in the second half.

A John Cooney penalty, was followed by a try from the scrum-half, but despite Gibbins’ try after 22 minutes and a couple of Finn Russell kicks, Ulster led 16-10 at the break as Cooney added two late penalties.

Glasgow scored first in the second-half when Gibbins dived over off a rolling maul seven minutes into the second-half.

But then Ulster took over and Timoney and Sean Reidy bagged tries, before Timoney clinched the bonus point at the death.

Gkasgow boss Dave Rennie said: “We started pretty well and got back to ten-all and I thought we had scored again.

“We had a fair bit of momentum around that time but we weren’t clinical enough.”
