Mellor at the double for clinical Tigers

- By ANDREW SMITH

TWO tries from Tigers wingman Greg Mellor firmly ensured National 2 North status will be maintained at Dore Moor.

In a highly entertaining game, the hosts finished strongly to condemn Leicester to their fifth defeat on the bounce. But it was the Lions who dominated early on. Hooker Ollie Taylor spilling the ball when a try seemed certain.

The home side were the first on the scoreboard through a Mark Ireland penalty.

Lions hit straight back with the opening try, centre Luke Veebel creating havoc in the Sheffield defence, breaking two tackles to force his way over.

The hosts took the initiative just before the break, Mellor finding himself on the end of a finely worked move to sprint home wide on the right, Ireland’s con-

version taking them in at 10-5. The visitors responded well after the restart, a break from flanker Simon Johnson was stopped just short but quick recycling allowed centre John Bowden in for the score.

With the sides locked at 10-10, a yellow card for a deliberate knock on by Lions flanker John Murdoch proved decisive. Ireland stroked two quick penalties edging them to 1610 ahead.

With six minutes remaining, and the hosts in the driving seat, Mellor sealed the win with a charge down, hacking through for his second try.
