Wizards weave their magic over weakened Ambers

- By JAY BAYFORD

ABERAVON returned to winning ways with a deserved win over Newport at the Talbot Athletic Ground.

The Black and Ambers rested the majority of their key men with the WRU National Cup to come next weekend and the Wizards took full advantage to run in seven tries.

It took the hosts just 84 seconds to open the scoring with scrum-half David Pritchard finishing off a fine team move to get things going. And debutant Frankie Jones was next on the scoresheet. The youngster had already shown glimpses of his talent but showed incredible pace to bag an interception try.

Aberavon were in full flow as their third try of the afternoon came five minutes later. Luke Joseph was in possession near the tryline following a wellworked lineout, and the flanker forced the ball over the whitewash with Steff Williams’ conversion increasing the lead.

Newport threatened a comeback when Haydn Palmer gave them a route back into the game but on the stroke of half-time Ben Jones wrenched the advantage back to the Wizards with a bonus-point winning try.

The second half continued with Aberavon on the front foot and Ben Thomas added to their score, following a yellow card to Newport lock Andrew Mann, with Williams converting. Luke Davies completed the scoring at the death, adding to an earlier penalty try. Star man Frankie Jones - Aberavon
