Powerful Ponty pull away with grandstand finish

- By PETER HUGHES

BARGOED were in contention for the first hour before four tries in the final quarter saw Pontypridd run away from their hosts.

The visitors opened the scoring with a try from wing Dale Stuckey but they were caught out on their own line close to the halfhour mark.

A clearance kick from their in-goal area was charged down and then touched down by Bargoed fly-half Matthew Lewis, who converted himself.

Alex Webber scored again for Ponty, converted by Diggby Bird, but two further tries for the hosts, from centre Darren Humphries and flanker Ben Fry, exposed further weaknesses in their defence. Both were converted by Lewis as they led 21-12 at the break.

While Bargoed were destined not to add to their score in the second half, Pontypridd also struggled to narrow the gap with both teams looking a little ragged in attack.

A turning point came when Bargoed second row Matthew Thomas saw yellow, paying the price for his pack collapsing a rolling maul.

The visitors quickly scored a try courtesy of scrum-half Jamie Hill while the power of their pack enabled replacement prop Huw Owen to claim the bonus-point score soon afterwards.

Two further tries for replacement outside-half Jordan Rees and wing Webber enabled Ponty to take what was ultimately a deserved victory. Star man Chris Dicomidis- Pontypridd
