MacGinty holds the Sharks’ incredible

- By JON NEWCOMBE

SALE legend Mark Cueto believes Chris Ashton and the Sharks will be “a match made in heaven” after the former England wing agreed to return to his North West roots.

The 31-year-old Wiganborn cross-coder has secured an early release from his contract at Toulon – where he broke the alltime Top 14 record for tries in a season playing at fullback – and joins an already star-studded Sale back line.

If his back-three partnership with fellow internationals, Denny Solomona and Marland Yarde does not entice fans to the AJ Bell Stadium in greater numbers, then nothing will.

For Cueto, the signing of such a ‘box-office’ star makes his commercial role at the club a whole lot easier, but he is equally excited about what Ashton, capped 39 times by his country, will bring on the pitch.

“I hope he’ll have a massive impact,” Cueto said. “For me, the wingers that go well at fullback are the wingers who have got very good game understanding.

“You’re out-and-out wingers, your speedsters, you give them the ball and they are good one-on-one and they score tries for you but at full-back you need to have a concept of what is going on generally in the game not just in your position. “You’ve got to open your eyes and see what is going on and predict three or four phases ahead. “Ashy knows the game and has that understanding. He’s always that guy who trails players and gets on the end of things. “People think it is luck that he is always there for that run in, but it isn’t, it is pure footballing knowledge and skill to be in the right place at the right time, a bit like a goal hanger in football. “Having that ability is one of the key reasons why he has switched to fullback so well.” Returning to the Premiership in
