Brits has taught me to never say never – Wyles

- By GARY FITZGERALD

BAR-OWNER Chris Wyles claims he is open to business for Mark McCall any time the Saracens boss wants him to lend a hand.

The former USA Eagles captain still has the urge to put his body on the line on a rugby field following his unexpected recall to Premiership Cup action.

Wyles, 35, felt like he had hardly been away from Allianz Park when stepping back onto the wing for the victory over Sale.

He had to convince his wife that he was physically and mentally ready to come out of retirement, having hung up his boots at the end of last season to concentrate on running the Wolfpack Bar he co-owns with Alastair Hargreaves.

Now, having shrugged off six months of cobwebs and shown he still has that competitive edge, Wyles is open to a few more Premiership appearances.

“I think it’s supposed to be a one-off but you never know with these things,” he said. “I’m learning not to make any promises in life after all Schalk Brits had his arm twisted to play again by South Africa. Life is a weird thing.

“Sarries has been my life. It’s where we started our business. It’s given me ten years of amazing memories. So if there are ways I can help out in the future I will definitely consider it.

“For me coming back and being involved with the boys again was a no-brainer. Being out in the real world makes you realise how special and amazing Sarries is. You can’t beat the camaraderie there is here. Saying that, Alastair and I have had a great time building our Wolf Pack business... it’s pretty close but not professional rugby.”

On his wife’s concerns about him playing again, he added: “My wife had some valid points. The reality is I hadn’t done it for six months and it is a pretty tough sport. Fortunately I’ve been playing Sunday League football and the body feels fine.”

McCall has not ruled out another SOS for Wyles in the future but hopes it will be a “one-off ” insisting: “It was great to have Wylesy back but if we don’t need to call him again it will mean we don’t have a lot of injuries.”
