Ice-cold Greg denies Dale at the last
GREG Smith kicked a lastminute penalty to give Fylde an arm wrestle of a win over a tough Wharfedale outfit.
The visitors had just dramatically levelled the game with two minutes to go through a converted try from replacement frontrower Ben Sowrey but they were denied at the death.
In poor weather conditions and constant heavy drizzle, Wharfedale took the lead through a converted Rhys Lovegrove try only for Fylde to reply through Connor Wilkinson after a fine Smith break.
Ben Vernon was then driven over from a lineout to give Fylde the lead and Smith converted for a 14-7 advantage.
Smith and Jack Blakeney-Edwards traded penalties to leave it at 17-10 to Fylde at the break.
After 35 minutes of a scoreless second half the game was held up for 15 minutes when Adam Joyner dislocated his knee.
On the resumption of play Wharfedale hammered away at the Fylde line and they were rewarded with their equalising try, which was converted by Blakeney-Edwards to level the scores.
In a dramatic finale Wilkinson, in his second critical contribution to the game, forced a turnover to give Smith the chance to win the game with a 40metre penalty in the last minute. The fly-half grabbed his chance to make it victory for his side and extend Fylde’s winning run to three matches.
