League leaders defeated as Frewen delivers at the death
FOR the second time in two seasons Craig Warlow’s Black & Amber army marched to Merthyr and came up with a stunning victory in a game in which the lead changed hands seven times.
Having lost at Pontypridd in the previous round, Warlow said that a game against the league leaders at The Wern was just what his side needed and a bonus-point try five minutes from time by full back Elliot Frewen snatched victory from the jaws of defeat after the Ironmen had shown their character to battle back into a 28-23 lead.
Centre Chay Smith and wing Harri Lang also crossed for Newport tries while impressive outside half Haydn Simons kicked three penalties and three conversions for 15 points.
Home hooker Matthew Dwyer scored twice and scrum half Adam Hoskins and replacement prop Louis Jones also got over to ensure the reigning champions took two bonus-points from their defeat. Full back Matthew Jarvis converted all four.
Despite scoring the best try of the game through Smith midway through the first half, Newport found themselves 14-13 behind at the break. Merthyr went further ahead with Hoskins’ try at the start of the second half, but Newport refused to lie down.
Simons’ boot got them back in the lead and not even the home side’s bonustry from Jones could stop them as Frewen ran in the match winner.
