BaaBaas or Springboks?

ARE the Barbarians even remotely considered to be an English club anymore?

There were 13 South Africans in yesterday’s squad to face Argentina – and not one from the Home Unions. I understand the reasons why in recent years the Barbarians have been more a Southern Hemisphere team/club, than English or even British. With the ludicrous amount of money the Premiership clubs ask for player release, it’s far cheaper for them to pay long haul air fares for players.

But surely a deal could be done so our young talent, which our clubs are currently bursting at the seams with, can play for the Barbarians against the likes of Argentina, even if it’s only in the name of player development. DAVID SHORT via email
