THE as­ser­tion in Peter Jack­son’s col­umn that Derek Mor­gan played for Eng­land but was born in Wales was fac­tu­ally in­ac­cu­rate. As the ar­ti­cle stated he was born in New­port: this was in Mon­mouthshire which un­til the Lo­cal Gov­ern­ment Act of 1972 was part of Eng­land!

In­deed New­port Rugby Club al­ways be­longed to both the RFU and the Welsh RFU, and peo­ple born in the county were al­lowed by agree­ment of the two unions to opt for ei­ther coun­try.

This didn’t ma­te­ri­ally af­fect the ar­ti­cle which was, as usual with Peter Jack­son, in­ter­est­ing and well writ­ten. DICK PEAR­SON
