Warriors fall to Allan penalty in Italy

- By GARY HEATLY

BENETTON won their fourth PRO14 match on the spin by downing Glasgow at the Stadio Monigo.

The Italians have kept themselves right in the mix for an end of season playoff place while Glasgow have now lost three league games in a row.

Benetton head coach Kieran Crowley said: “I was really pleased with the way the guys fronted up and that really helped us to get this one over the line.”

Opposite number Dave Rennie said: “Once again we shot ourselves in the foot with some poor decision making.”

Second row Dean Budd was the star man for Benetton and he opened the scoring from short range in the 13th minute. Stand-off Tommaso Allan converted.

Glasgow hit back with a converted effort by centre Sam Johnson in the 22nd minute, but Benetton did not see that as a setback and soon had a second try. Budd peeled off a driving maul and powered through two defenders to go over again and they were 12-7 up.

Glasgow made sure they were ahead at the interval though when Johnson’s neat footwork set-up sNo.9 George Horne who took the invitation to go over. Hastings converted for 14-12.

But 12 minutes into the second half an unconverted try by No.8 Braam Steyn put the Italians back in front. A Hastings penalty made it 17-17, but the hosts came out on top with a penalty by Allan in the 67th minute.
