Victory for Lions despite Chester efforts

Leicester L ...... 25 Chester ............ 19

- By MIKE HOWKINS

LEICESTER Lions and Chester played out an enthralling encounter in the East Midlands, with the hosts edging a topsy-turvy encounter.

Chester wing Adam King gave the visitors an early advantage when he struck after three minutes, but centre James Robins could not add the extras for the visitors.

The Lions took a while to warm up but they got their noses in front on 20 minutes through a driving maul from a lineout, hooker Ollie Taylor taking the plaudits as he powered over with Harry Key slotting the extra two points for the lead.

But back came Chester almost immediately, with outside centre Tom Foden displaying a telling, scything run to power his way across the Leicester line, Robins this time successful with the conversion.

Lions roared out in the second half and got their just rewards through a Key penalty, before Devon Constant powered over from the left for a converted try that put the home side 15-12 ahead.

Again, Chester’s response was swift and Alick Croft’s converted score on the hour-mark got them back into the driving seat.

But in another twist, Sam Benjamin dotted down with 14 minutes to go, Key missing the conversion as the home side opened up a three-point lead.

And Key’s three-pointer late on finally sealed a hard-fought win for the home side.
