Evans insists he’s nearing top form after injury niggles

- By STEFFAN THOMAS

ROB Evans has revealed the full extent of the horror concussion which hit him last season.

The Scarlets and Wales prop is determined to start 2019 with a bang after a slow start to the campaign due to niggly injuries.

And as his team-mates Leigh Halfpenny and Blade Thomson attempt to battle back from head knocks, Evans knows full well they must be handled with care.

“Samson Lee had a concussion the week before I did and I told him he was soft,” Evans said. “That bit me on the backside because the week after I was out for six weeks with it.

“I was perfectly fine the night I had my bang, but the next day my dad came over. He was knocking around with something outside, but the sound just went through me.

“I started being sick and there was blood coming out. You think you feel alright and the next thing, bang the symptoms are back.

“Every case is different, but with your head you can’t put a timescale on it. It’s good they treat it with the proper care and I’m sure Leigh and Blade will be fine. There’s no point risking it by rushing them back because it could end their careers.”

By his own admission Evans has struggled with a shoulder injury this term and he was usurped as firstchoice Wales loosehead by Nicky Smith in November.

“My season so far has been a bit stop-start, but that’s sport,” he added. “I had a shoulder injury and hadn’t played much rugby and then I was on the bench for Wales.

“I just feel I’m starting to get into it a bit more now. I want to be starting and hopefully over the next few weeks I can show them I’m good enough to be number one.

“I’ll keep working hard and concentrate on myself while trying to get some wins at the Scarlets because that’s all I really care about at the moment.”

Evans is out of contract at the end of the season but wants to stay in Llanelli. He said: “I’m in negotiations but I’ll be looking to stay with the Scarlets because I don’t want to go anywhere else. I’m happy where I am.”
