Welsh Division One round-up

- By DAVID SIMPSON

BRECON continued their charge in One East as they ran in six tries in a 40-14 win at Caerleon.

Outside centre Cameron Gardner was at the double with wingers Dafydd Edwards and Lewys Cooke, No.8 and skipper Ewan Williams and Mike Powell also crashing over.

Fly-half Dean Gunter converted five of the six tries for the visitors as they chalked up their third victory in seven days, having also booked their place in the last 16 of the WRU National Plate by beating Rumney in the third round.

Penallta, who thumped Ynysybwl 55-10, are four points behind while Brynmawr, who won 22-7 at Risca, are a point further back in third.

Brecon will now turn their attention towards next Saturday’s Plate clash at Rhiwbina – who are right in the thick of a title race in One East Central.

Matt Williams’ hat-trick inspired the Squirrels to a 34-10 win over Porth Harlequins at Caedelyn Park, with Oliver Golden and Dafydd Williams their other try scorers.

Rhiwbina, in second, sit six points back on leaders Glamorgan Wanderers but do have three games in hand. The Wanderers, meanwhile, were 29-19 winners at Gilfach Goch.

In One West Central Ystalyfera – having beaten rivals Glynneath last weekend – took another step towards the title as they won 40-23 at Tondu to make it 10 wins from 11 games.

The Fera are now five points clear of Glynneath, who slipped to a second straight defeat – this time 17-16 against Bonymaen.

One West leaders Felinfoel were 25-13 to the good at home against Aberystwyth when their game was abandoned after 61 minutes due to a hamstring injury picked up by the referee.

Llangennech won 27-20 at Kidwelly to move back into second above Gowerton, who were defeated 23-0 at Gorseinon.

Elsewhere, Llandudno saw off Caernarfon 22-11.
