The Rugby Paper

We must make sure Alun-Wyn remains in Wales

-

ALUN-WYN Jones is a leader, pure and simple. In my opinion he defines Welsh rugby, which is why it must be one of our top priorities to ensure he’s not lost from the game in this country.

Barring injury – what a catastrophe that would be – Al will captain Wales at the World Cup in Japan at the end of the year, but after that it’s hard to know what will happen.

He’ll be 34 by then and I don’t think anyone would blame him if he opted for a payday either in England or France.

Let’s face facts. A player of his quality could name his price in the Gallagher Premiership, Top 14 or in countries like Japan. I’m sure teams in Super Rugby would also be sniffing around for his signature were he to be availalable.

That’s a reality when you’re one of the best in your position in the world, but I think it would send a very bad message if Al was to move elsewhere.

What I did find encouraging was to read Al talking about his target of a fourth Lions tour.

I know him well and the way he manages his body and game means that’s a more than realistic target.

For that to happen, though, Al will need support and I’m not sure he’d get that in England or France where he’d have to play a lot of rugby at the latter end of his career.

If he stays in Wales, works with the powers that be on when he can be rested (as is happening now), and continues to perform as he is, then I see no reason why we can’t see him in South Africa in 2021.

For that to happen, it’s likely Al will still be playing for Wales which can only be good news. So come on Ospreys and the WRU, sort a new deal for one of our country’s best ever!
