Classy Clifton pull clear of drop zone

Worthing ...... 29 Clifton .......... 49

- By DEAN THOMAS

CLIFTON put together a dominant second-half performance to pull away from Worthing and ran out comfortable winners.

Worthing had opened the scoring within the first five minutes when George Hammond intercepted and scored but Clifton hit back soon after, Sam Goatley claiming the try and Thomas Francis giving the visitors a slender lead with the subsequent conversion.

It was déjà vu for Worthing as another interception led to another try this time from winger Harry Barlow and then, as if by magic, it happened again when full-back Matthew McLean ran in the third Worthing try and knocked over two conversions to open a gap.

Then it was Clifton’s turn. Goatley grabbed a second and Will Pomphrey both ran in tries before half-time and both were

converted Francis to give the visitors the lead and the ascension. They picked up where they left off in the second-half with scrumhalf Mitchell Spencer dotting down before Goatley completed his hat-trick, both converted by McLean.

Worthing did try and stage a comeback when George Hammond scored his second try of the game, converted by Francis who had earlier knocked over a penalty to bring them back to within a converted score.

But Clifton took control in the last ten minutes and tries from Henry Harper and a fourth from Goatley put them out of sight.
