I don’t think I’m on Gat’s list yet admits Corey

- STEFFAN THOMAS

COREY Allen believes he is playing the best rugby of his career, but still expects to be snubbed by Wales.

The 25-year-old has been in top form for the Ospreys this season despite competing with Scott Williams and Owen Watkin for a centre spot in Allen Clarke’s side.

Warren Gatland names his Wales squad for the Six Nations on Tuesday, but Allen is not holding out much hope of selection.

“I feel I’m playing the best rugby I’ve played over a consistent period of time,” he said.

“In the past when I’ve gone on a big run it’s usually been halted by an injury. I’m playing a lot better and more consistently than I’ve played in the past.

“I will keep improving, but when you look at Wales historically they are very good at rewarding players who’ve played well.

“The centres they picked in the autumn all played well. They are probably going to stick to those centres again and reward them for what they did in the autumn, but you never know.

“I am aware of when my name is mentioned and it’s always nice to be spoken about with regards to the Wales squad. As long as I’m playing well what will be will be.”

Former Cardiff Blues man and Wales Sevens ace Allen has six Test caps, but hasn’t played for his country since June 2017.

For now the talented back is focusing on regional duties at the Ospreys where he hopes to win the Challenge Cup, just like the Blues did last year.

Allen said: “It does get the club’s profile up if you can win the Challenge Cup. If you can get through the pool stages it’s all to play for and if you get a good draw then you’re odds on to make the final.

“You saw that with the Cardiff Blues players last season. Winning a trophy is something I’ve never done, but it’s something I want to do.

“I think we match up very well with most teams in Europe. We are really strong at home in Europe so I’d really fancy our chances.”
