King wanted at Kingsholm

-

ALEX King has emerged as a shock target to become Gloucester’s new attack and skills coach in George Skivington’s new-look Kingsholm coaching staff.

King has left Montpellier where he has been an assistant coach for the last two years following three and a half years in the Premiership with Northampton Saints. Skivington spent four seasons playing alongside King, 45, at Wasps before the former England fly-half moved to France with Clermont Auvergne.

King, who went to university in Bristol and has also worked as Wales attack coach, started his coaching career with Clermont and has long been seen as a bright coaching talent. Skivington and Gloucester last week parted company with Rory Teague, who missed out on the top job following the departures of David Humphreys and Johan Ackermann. King is set to be given the job after talk that the Cherry and Whites were looking at Paul Hodgson, who is the director of sport at Cranmore School in Surrey.

Meanwhile, the Cherry and Whites are also looking to strengthen their playing staff before returning to action next month. The departure of second row Gerbrandt Grobler to Stade Francais last week has left them woefully short in the boiler room having already lost another Springbok, Franco Mostert, who has joined the exodus from the club to Japan. Skivington and Alex Brown, who is now in charge of Gloucester’s recruitment, are also looking to add a loose-head prop to the squad.
