Evans: Big hearts won the day for us

-

STEFF Evans hailed the heart and desire that helped Scarlets defy a desperate late Bath onslaught for his side’s memorable win at The Rec.

The Welsh visitors grabbed the points thanks to a backs-to-thewall defiance to win the opening Champions Cup Pool A clash with their English rivals.

Scarlets wing Evans said: “We were penned into our final five for so long at the end but credit to the boys they stuck at it and our defence was excellent.

“We like to play an expansive game especially when conditions allow it. We wanted to take the game to them and try and make our pressure count.

“But this is the perfect way to start the Champions Cup and we have to build on it.”

Bath captain Charlie Ewels rued the TMO decision that denied Ben Spencer a try in added on time when the Bath scrum-half insisted he had grounded the ball.

Ewels saidf: “It’s frustrating and if that try had been given at the end when Ben felt he grounded the ball then it would have been good outcome.

“Everybody will be thinking about that moment but we can’t use it as an excuse.

“We lost the game because some of our breakdown accuracy was not right and our kick return was poor. We also had a few lapses of concentration that allowed them to score points.”
