Derby day decided by frantic final ten minutes

- By GARY HEATLY

EDINBURGH scored ten points in the space of four minutes in the last quarter and then held on to win a hard-fought derby at Murrayfield.

Jaco van der Walt kicked a penalty on 64 minutes and Magnus Bradbury went over for a try soon after. A late Lewis Bean try threatened a comeback, but it was not enough.

Man-of-the-match Mark Bennett said: “The pack really stepped up to give us the platform and then we worked hard for the win.”

Both times started at a lively pace, but scoring chances were few and far between.

Winger Ratu Tagive dropped a high ball in his own 22 and Edinburgh exerted pressure from the scrum. Glasgow held them out, but Edinburgh were soon back on the attack and a number of forward drives saw them camped on the Warriors try line.

Referee Sam GroveWhite warned Glasgow the next penalty would result in a sin-binning but lock Scott Cummings forced a turnover and they escaped.

Despite early dominance from Edinburgh, it was Glasgow who should have taken the lead in the 29th minute but fly-half Brandon Thomson somehow missed a penalty from in front of the posts.

That miss summed up the half; both sides huffing and puffing but making basic errors.

Warriors nearly opened the scoring on 45 minutes when a quick tap penalty from scrumhalf Ali Price set-up tighthead Zander Fagerson five metres out. However, the Scotland prop knocked the ball on

in the tackle and the chance was lost.

Ten minutes later Edinburgh changed their props, Scotland men Rory Sutherland and Simon Berghan coming on to try and get their side on the front foot in the closing stages.

With 15 minutes to go Edinburgh took the lead with a penalty after hooker George Turner was penalised. Jaco van der Walt, who recently made his Scotland debut, knocked the kick over.

Four minutes later a loose pass by Thomson was hacked on by van der Walt and replacement Magnus Bradbury won the race to score under the posts. Van der Walt converted before a late try by Glasgow replacement Lewis Bean – converted by fellow sub Ross Thompson – earned them a losing bonus.
