Haydn was a diamond
KIMBERLEY is famous for The Big Hole, a massive excavation leading to the town’s diamond mine. Haydn Morris marked his visit there with the 1955 Lions by finding enough holes in the local Griqualand West team to score a hat-trick of tries on debut.
He had scored nine in eight matches and put himself in serious contention for a Test place when a damaged ankle ended his tour. Another injury two years earlier had cost him his place in the Cardiff team that beat the All Blacks at the Arms Park.
A native of Mountain Ash, Morris left Wales in the mid-Sixties to take up a teaching appointment in Norwich. He stayed for the rest of his life, making a huge contribution to the game in East Anglia not least as coach of the Norfolk county team.
Haydn died in Norwich last week at the age of 92.
