- JON NEWCOMBE

LOCAL bragging rights and £10,000 will be up for grabs after a new intercounty competition was announced in Yorkshire.

With no league fixtures this season, Leeds Tykes, Wharfedale, Otley and Huddersfield have joined forces to play for the Ventur Cup, named after the Leeds-based travel company.

Each club will play each other at home and away on Saturdays, starting on May 8, with games played under RFU modified rules.

After Round 6, all four teams will compete in a Finals Day at Emerald Headingley on Saturday June 19 for the prize fund with the top two teams playing for the Ventur Cup and teams 3 v 4 contesting the Ventur Plate.

Phil Davies, Leeds Tykes director of rugby said: “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the players, coaches and supporters to play and watch again and it’s a much needed boost for the clubs involved. They are all very keen to resume and we all appreciate the support of sponsors, Ventur too.”
