Cardiff last up for unbeaten Christ College

- ■ By BEN JAYCOCK

CHRIST College Brecon face Cardiff High Scool on Wednesday aiming to complete an unbeaten season in the East Wales Premier Schools League.

Head coach Daniel Parry said: “I can’t describe how pleasing it is to see the effort the boys put in in training and the attitude and ethos they put in to play together as a team. I’m very proud. To go unbeaten in the league is testament to the hard work the boys have put in.”

Christ College have also shone in the 10s version of the game, finishing runners up at the Seaford Southern 10’s.

Parry’s side finished top of their pool and defeated RGS High Wycombe 21-7 in the semi-final. They raced into a 12-0 lead in the final but Trinity School Croydon scored three tries to make the score 17-12.

A late Christ College try pushed the game into extra time, with the London school stealing a 22-17 victory in the last minute.

Parry added: “It’s been a breath of fresh air to go across the border and compete with the top English schools. We were a bit of an unknown going down there, and while it was heartbreaking to finish runner-up it gives us that progression of where we are and where we’re looking to head towards.”

Flanker Iwan Coyle has been the club’s standout player this season, breaking the school record for most tries scored in a season with five hat-tricks, as well as being a menace at the breakdown.

Parry believes many of his players can go all the way in the game and are destined to take the next step at the end of the season.

He said: “There’s definitely a good handful of our boys who can take the next step above, they’ll play Welsh Premiership at least. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the boys represent the BUCS Super Rugby teams next year and see them develop even further.”

After Wednesday’s 15s finale attention swiftly turns to the 7s circuit as Christ College aim to be competitive at the Rosslyn Park 7s next month.
