Davies brothers help get Newbridge off to flyer

THE Davies brothers combined to give Newbridge a flying start in Round 1 of the main competitio­n in the WRU Plate as they both scored tries in a 34-13 home win over Mountain Ash.

Matthew and Dan Davies joined Stuart Vokes, Jakob Duffy and Mike Preece in securing a bonus-point victory. Eamon Rees converted three of the five tries and also added a penalty, while the visitors had tries from Curtis Williams and Ewan Rees and a penalty from Callum Hall.

It was plain sailing for another Division 1 East team as Brecon went to Cardiff and dished out a 20-0 beating to St Jospeh’s. Jake Crockett and Ioan Edwards crossed for the visitors’ tries and Jake Newman kicked ten points.

Newcastle Emyln were in charge throughout their 19-12 home win over Rhydyfelin as Dean James, Andrew Wynne and Llyr Davies crossed for tries and Sean Leonard added two conversion­s.

Meanwhile, Gowerton clung on to win a thriller against Llangennec­h, 27-26.

In Division 1 East,

Dowlais overpowere­d

Senghenydd 29-12. Victory allowed the home side to move up to seventh courtesy of tries from Nathan Pritchard, Daniel Butler, Luke Price, Chad Thomas and a standout try by Sam Davies who intercepte­d a Senghenydd pass and ran 60 metres to touch down.

In Division 1 West, Birchgrove beat Brynamman 34-15 to move within three points of second place. Josh Jarret was in fine form, scoring two tries and converting two. The standout try was from Darren Poland who broke from 50 metres and cut across the midfield to score at the posts.

In the first round of the WRU Bowl, Fairwater went to Haverfordw­est and won 18-5 and Tumble clung on to win 29-27 at

St Clears and

Bryncethin won 24-12 at

Machynllet­h.
