Dragons set to bring Morgan home

- By STEFFAN THOMAS

THE Dragons are close to re-signing former Wales centre Tyler Morgan from the Scarlets, while they have also completed a deal to bring Angus O’Brien back to the club.

Morgan, 26, won the last of his five Wales caps in 2018, and spent six seasons with the Dragons before moving west in 2020.

O’Brien is returning home to add depth at outside-half position.

Both players have been peripheral figures at the Scarlets and will return to Rodney Parade in search of more game time.

Should the deal get completed, Morgan will be the second centre to sign for the Dragons ahead of next season with Welsh qualified Bath man Max Clarke joining Dean Ryan’s side.

Ryan has also succeeded in retaining No.10 Sam Davies who was a target for Bath. The Premiership strugglers have now settled on South African international Curwin Bosch from the Sharks.

Davies has been a mainstay at the Dragons since joining the Newport based side from the Ospreys in 2019. The son of former Wales centre and coach Nigel Davies turned down lucrative offers to play in England and France three years ago to try and win more international caps.

But he has not appeared for Wales in the Wayne Pivac era with the last of his caps coming against Samoa in 2017.

Ryan has also recruited former Munster and Northampton outside-half JJ Hanrahan from Clermont Auvergne, Exeter’s Welsh-qualified lock Sean Lonsdale, Wales prop Rhodri Jones from Ospreys, and Ulster hooker Bradley Roberts.

Meanwhile, Dragons utility back Josh Lewis looks set to join the Ospreys for next season.
