Runaway leaders gone for a Burton
BURTON provided the shock of the day in beating runaway league leaders Newport (Salop)
and ending their 15-game winning run.
Newport’s winning run dated back until October but their title charge was brought to a halt with Burton taking a 30-22 away win.
Joshua Kent, Alfredo Bergada, Tristan De Jagger and James Davies all scored tries for the visitors while Charles Bunting kicked two conversions and two penalties.
Henry Vaka scored a brace of tries for the hosts and Orisi Nawaqaliva scored the other.
Second-placed Sheffield
took advantage of that rare defeat to pull back to seven points behind Newport with four games to play thanks to a 45-19 win at Sandbach.
Sandbach provided resistance with tries from Harry Hughes, Monty Weatherby and John Whittaker but were eventually comfortably beaten.
The day was made even sweeter for Sheffield as third-placed Syston also dropped points, suffering a 26-24 loss at Scunthorpe.
Syston’s points came courtesy of a penalty try along with scores from Ross Burgoine and Robbie Clay.
Dudley Kingswinford increased the gap between themselves and danger by beating Doncaster Phoenix with a 34-6 victory.
Tries for the hosts came via Ben Rhodes, Joseph Dunn, Kieron Williams and Shaun Griffiths while Sam Vaughan kicked all four conversions and two penalties.
Nuneaton pulled away from the bottom three after recording a 33-25 home win against Bromsgrove.
In a tight battle for a top-five finish the defeat meant Bromsgrove dropped to seventh, despite tries from Thomas Millen, William Harris and Billy Grant.
Broadstreet also gave themselves breathing space in the bottom half by taking a 57-31 win at
Oundle.
