Now is our time to shine, insists Curry

- ■ By BEN JAYCOCK

HULL captain Cam Curry describes winning the National 2 North title against arch-rivals Hull Ionians as one of the proudest days of his life and is looking forward to the challenge of National 1.

Curry’s side secured the title at their home ground – LTS Leisure Ferens Ground – with a dramatic 31-29 win over Ionians, courtesy of Reece Dean’s last-gasp try, to send Hull up to the third tier of English rugby for the first time in their history.

And Curry says the club enjoyed one big party afterwards.

“All the emotions came out at once,” he said. “It was a fantastic day and one of the proudest of my life. To get to captain the side in that historic win was overwhelming and we had a good party. It’ll definitely be a day I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”

Hull suffered defeats to Stourbridge and Rotherham Titans early in the campaign but went on an incredible 20-game win streak to secure the title with a game to spare.

Curry said: “I’m over

the moon with our campaign. I’ve played rugby for 15 years and never had a season quite like this. We started the season not knowing what the league would throw at us because after the two-year hiatus. We didn’t know which teams were going to be strong and which teams would be competing for the league.

“We had a good preseason and targeted a top

four finish at the start of the season. We suffered a couple of early defeats but ater that we hit a vein of form right from October to the last day of the season where we didn’t lose another game.

“You go through the motions of hoping to be promoted and slowly it becomes a reality and all of a sudden you become the favourites.”

Curry describes their

title win as ‘huge’ and after living in the shadow of Ionians, he believes it’s now their time to shine in National 1.

“It’s certainly drawn attention towards us,” he added. “For years there’s been two teams in Hull. Ionians have played at the higher level and we never have, but now it’s our turn. We are now the number one team for rugby union in the area, so it’s exciting.

Hopefully it draws in good crowds next year and players in the areas we need to strengthen.

“We’re excited for the challenge National 1 holds for us and looking forward to pre-season. We know there's going to be a lot more travel and we’ll be playing teams we haven’t faced before but it's no different than coming back after Covid and playing with a new set of lads.”
